Stoneware Functional Art
These pieces are mostly wheel-thrown and made out of stoneware, a strong durable type of clay which can be fired to high temperatures. Its nonporous quality (once fired high) means it does not need a glaze. However, the pieces in this range are all glazed for aesthetic value, artistic effect and practical use as they are all fired to 1260C in an electric kiln. This means that all the ceramics in this stoneware collection can be used functionally. I wanted to create ceramics that can stand alone as artwork but which can also have a practical use if required. For this reason I have experimented with glaze work and surface decoration. Some, like the teapot and mugs, have specific uses, but to me they are all artwork with a functional capability as they all have the added advantage of being oven proof, microwave and dishwasher safe.
